Colts make islanders pay
Anybody leaving Frog Lane at halt-time would have been surprised at the margin of Colts' victory, which virtually sends St. David's back to the Second Division.
The Islanders, who can now only avoid the drop by goal difference over PHC, had a fair share of the first-half chances and had striker Jerry Laws beaten keeper Andre Hendrickson with the best chance of the half in the 41st minute the outcome of the match might have been different.
Laws was put clear of the Colts defence but with just keeper Hendrickson to beat from inside the penalty area, Laws saw his effort blocked away for a corner as Colts escaped.
St. David's let their intentions known right from the outset when they won the game's first corner after just 50 seconds and lanky Dale Fox, a former goalkeeper for Colts, met the cross at the far post to send in a header that came back off the crossbar.
Colts gradually came more into the match with Craig Smith threatening down the left and Joey Weeks combining well in the middle with captain Ellington Weldon.
Weeks put a header wide of the near post in the 14th minute following a Smith cross and then late in the half Weeks put a shot wide of the far post after a good Colts move down the flank.
St. David's had a couple of injury scares late in the half when, first, Otis Minors went down after a challenge from Jah Samuels and then Fox injured his back when falling awkwardly after a challenge on May Ray.
Colts forced the first corner in the second half, from which Weeks drove a low shot into the side-netting after two minutes. That seemed to set them into gear for from that point it was virtually all one-way traffic as the home team took control.
A good move in the 49th minute, started when mid-fielder Vic Ball switched to the far side to Weeks saw him set up Craig Smith for a scorcher that just missed the far top corner.
Then Weldon ran the ball in from the right before Smith blasted a right-foot shot well over the top.
A goal by Colts looked inevitable and it came in the 53rd minute when Weeks worked closely with Weldon on the left side and then back-heeled for Weldon to drive in his 14th goal of the season with his left foot from an acute angle.
Ball should have made it 2-0 two minutes later when he wasted a perfect pass from Weldon with a pick-your-spot volley that went wide. Two minutes after that he was replaced by Quincy Aberdeen.
St. David's brought on James Pace for the injured Michael Kelly (hamstring) and took the opportunity to switch Fox from midfield to the centre of the defence with orders to mark Weldon closely.
But Colts still scored a second in the 68th minute when Weldon combined with the hard working Leonard Hypolite on the left and Aberdeen got on the end of the cross to volley past 16-year-old keeper Sydney Minors from close range.
Full-back Anthony (Toe) Wilson closed out the scoring in the 76th minute when he volleyed into the roof of the net from close range following a freekick.
