New acts delight crowds
Agricultural Exhibition.
Over the three days of the annual festival the total attendance was down on last year, at 15,800.
But Friday was a bumper day, especially with hundreds of children boosting the 7,100 crowd. It was the second biggest Friday attendance in the last seven shows.
Honeymooners Mr. and Mrs. Tony Curtis were among the crowds looking at the displays of animals, plants and food.
Treasurer Mrs. Diane Saunders confirmed the sighting of the star of more than 100 movies.
Mrs. Saunders was particularly pleased with the reaction to some of the novelty items on the programme. This included the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, a milking exhibition, Mel Bartholemew's square foot gardening and ventriloquist Bob Trent.
The lumberjack show, involving sawing and chopping races, was a crowd-pleaser and Mr. Trent and his Walter Ego delighted the children.
She said: "The show was a success. Although crowds were down on last year the good weather was a bonus, especially when the forecast was not so good.
"The number of exhibits was better than last year. It could have been even better if had not been for the rain on Monday and Tuesday.
"The standard was as high as usual. I overheard one visitor saying that he could not believe that a place as small as Bermuda has so many exhibits of such a high standard.'' Mrs. Saunders said that the 15,800 figure was down on last year and the biggest crowd in 1991, when 18,000 people turned up to see Walt Disney characters.
Warwick was Bermuda's best agricultural parish gaining most points in the exhibition.
Miss Mandy Oatley was the junior with the most points and Mr. Peter Green the adult exhibitor who gained most points.
Mr. Daniel Greenslade was the leading junior horseman taking over from last year's winner Miss Melissa Pereech who won the junior jumping championship.
