But she said last week that the idea -- which is also contained in a Corporation of St. George's proposal -- was subject to Cabinet approval.

Ms Gordon was commenting on calls by the two St. George's North MPs to move the St. George's youth centre to the school building.

The school was recently relocated to the Roger B. Chaffee School at the former US Naval Air Station at St. David's.

Mr. Leon (Jimmy) Williams and Ms Jennifer Smith said in a news release that security was needed at the site until it was put to proper use.

Ms Smith, the Deputy Opposition Leader and Shadow Education Minister, said the current St. George's Youth Centre is too small and unlike the school site, does not have a gymnasium or playing field.

Mr. Williams, also a Progressive Labour Party MP, said other community groups could use the site, too.

But vandalism was already occurring and security was needed, he said. The Wor.

Henry Hayward, Mayor of the Town of St. George, said it is part of the Town Plan that was now being developed to transform the school into a combined Youth Centre and facility for senior citizens.

But the plan would not be completed until the end of the year and he did not think anything would happen before then.

Mr. Hayward noted that the present youth and senior facilities in St. George's were operated by Government, not the Corporation, and the same would apply to the new centre.

Mr. Williams and Ms Smith also expressed concern about the condition of roads in the St. George's area following Hurricane Felix, which hit the Island on August 15.
