Vasco on brink of clinching league crown
month of play.
Pushing their all-around unbeaten streak to 20 games, Vasco all but wrapped up their second title in three years by punishing Devonshire Colts 3-1 at BAA Field on Saturday night (see report, Page 23).
That victory, combined with results from yesterday's three matches, left them needing only one victory -- or two draws -- in their remaining games against North Village, Somerset or Devonshire Cougars.
Conversely, one loss by Dandy Town, who slipped into second spot with yesterday's 2-1 win over Cougars, and Town are out, although they could conceivably stay alive with a draw against Colts, PHC or Boulevard.
Same for Boulevard, who entered yesterday's match against last-placed PHC needing a win to stay in second place, five points behind Vasco. Instead, their stunning 1-0 loss left them eight back and they now need to win all three games and hope Vasco and Town lose all of theirs.
A wild card in the equation is North Village. Their scheduled game on Friday against Hotels was postponed but a win in the rescheduled match, probably this week, would pull them equal with Town, meaning the same must-win situation.
Vasco currently hold a much better goal difference than all of their rivals.
Meanwhile, the relegation battle is closer, especially after PHC's win and losses yesterday by both Somerset and Cougars. PHC are still at the bottom of the table, but only a point behind Hotels and two back of Cougars and Somerset. The bottom two teams will play in the Second Division nest year.
