Committee to protest arrival of Governor
the arrival of Lord Waddington, Bermuda's new Governor.
Committee chairperson, Mr. Walton Brown, said the protest would take place on August 25, the day Lord Waddington is due to fly in.
"We believe Bermuda has had a British Governor appointed from London long enough,'' he said. "They should be allowing for some Bermudian to gain experience in the ceremonial affairs of the country. The time is long overdue for a Bermudian Governor and this was a good opportunity for Britain to demonstrate that.'' Mr. Brown said it was the Governor, not Members of Parliament, who had the authority over external affairs, the Police Force, the Bermuda Regiment, internal security and who selected three persons to sit in the Senate.
"Even though we pay fully for these areas, we have no control over them,'' he said. "In fact, our parliamentarians were only recently given permission to ask questions about the Police and the Regiment. But should these areas not be accountable to the voters through our elected representatives? "The Governor's role, in its present form, is a relic from an outdated era and demands immediate change.
"One short-term measure would be the appointment of a Bermudian Governor while the country prepares itself for independence. If Britain had Bermuda's best interests at heart -- its very justification for colonialism -- it would take responsible action to address these concerns.''
