Meaningless second division affair comes to violent end
Soccer hooliganism reared its ugly head for the second time in less than a week when violence broke out at Devonshire Rec., field during a Second Division clash after Devonshire Cougars and Paget had played to a 0-0 draw.
Several Cougars players besieged referee Peter Sousa after he had blown the final whistle and fans chipped in, throwing bottles onto the pitch in a show of disapproval of his handling of the match.
It is believed that Sousa and his accompanying linesmen had to seek refuge in the changing room until the situation outside cooled.
Three ejections had earlier punctuated this encounter between two teams already eliminated from all of the major competitions and having little left to play for.
Cougars players Trevor Smith, Cory Smith and Dwayne Bean were given their marching orders during the second half and this is believed to have sparked the ugly scene that ensued later.
On the incident Sousa, who was also the man in charge at the recent Friendship Trophy match at BAA that saw a mob scene erupt at its conclusion, would only say that: "There was an incident that happened after the game that I'll put in my report to the BFA.
"There wasn't a riot or anything like that.'' In fact the referee was kept quite busy in this otherwise dull and uninspiring contest, handing out no less than six yellow cards as players on both sides appeared bent on causing harm to their opponents rather than playing constructive soccer and in the end 0-0 was a just result.
Also in the match, Cougars forward Devon Brangman was carted off with a suspected broken nose after the ball had slammed into his face.
Meanwhile, Vasco all but clinched the Second Division championship, lashing Wolves 4-1.
Striker Ricky Mallory enjoyed a field day, netting all four goals for the victors.
The result took Vasco to 29 points, two ahead of second-placed Southampton, who would need to beat Port Royal and have Vasco lose to Prospect by any combination of 13 goals to take the title.
Rangers, who have already clinched promotion with Vasco, stayed in touch by defeating Social Club 3-2.
It was not easy for Rangers though as Social Club twice equalised before falling to a late goal by the home side.
Goals came from Pernell Brangman, in the first half, while Mitchell Raynor and Ascento Russell tallied in the second for Southampton.
Dean Young and Troy Darrell were on the mark for the Bluebirds.
In a preview of the Shield final, Prospect downed BAA 2-1 behind goals from Gary Albright and Cal Smith while Robert Pacheco tallied for the Green Knights.
The day's remaining match saw the erratic Somerset Eagles succumb to the challenge of lowly Port Royal 4-2 at White Hill.
Michael Bean led Royal, netting two goals, and he was assisted by one each from Nakia Smith and Giovanni Wilson.
Everett Wellman and Stevie Riley struck for the west-enders.
