Colts thwarted by Davis' heroics

He may have been relegated to the bench but Cyaminde Davis showed he's still a valuable member of Dandy Town Hornets.

Davis, pressed into service when starting 'keeper Antoine Lightbourne went down with an injury, pulled off a couple of game-saving stops to preserve Town's victory over Devonshire Colts at BAA Field yesterday.

For the first 80 minutes of this Town-dominated contest, Lightbourne's only concern was staying awake. Then, with Colts desperately pushing for the equaliser, Lightbourne twisted his ankle during a scramble and coach Mark Trott had to call on Davis.

No problem. Davis, last year's number one, almost immediately dived to his right to grab one shot then, in the 90th minute, leaped high to punch away Mark Ray's 20-yard missile headed towards the far corner.

Undeterred, Colts continued to press in injury time and Davis, left floundering on the ground after blocking a desperation attempt, himself had a capable back-up. As mayhem circled around him, midefielder Scott Morton stood tall on the goal-line to clear away Atumae Zuill's blast at the deserted goal.

The surprising part was that the last-minute heroics were even a factor. Town held a huge edge in play throughout but were only able to get one shot past Colts 'keeper Troy Hall.

And that, too, came from an unexpected source. With Town's dynamic duo of Carlos Smith and Darron Simons kept under a defensive blanket for much of the game, Seyoum Tuzo emerged to score the lone goal when he converted his own rebound 32 minutes into the second half.

"I tried to cross the ball but the defender blocked it,'' said Tuzo of his first goal of the season. "It came right back to me and I managed to slide it in with my left (foot).'' Smith and Simons finally found more running room in the second half but mostly fell victim to poor finishing.

At the other end, hard-nosed defence from the likes of Lloyd Chirstopher, Pernell Douglas and Wylie Rudo prevented any serious threat from Colts.
