Trott pops up late for Colts
A header by Harrison Trott eight minutes from the end separated these two teams at Frog Lane field as Second Division side Southampton Rangers held their own against their high-riding opponents.
The winning goal came as a result of a free kick by Derek Wright on the left side. The ball bounced in the penalty area and after goalkeeper Lynn Tucker attempted to slap it clear, Trott followed up to steer his header past the 'keeper at the far post.
The goal came at the end of a long period of pressure by Rangers, which saw full-back Anthony Wilson race back to rob substitute Ricky Nesbitt who was clear down the middle just a minute earlier.
Rangers came into this match determined to upset their First Division opponents and it showed during the early stages.
The best chance fell to Trott in the 14th minute when he gained possession and raced forward down the middle before passing to his left for Craig Smith who hit a weak shot straight at the 'keeper.
Ascento Russell wasted a good chance at the other end four minutes later when he opted to try to find Kenny Burt with his pass into the box when in a good position himself to test the 'keeper. The ball was half-cleared to Janeiro Tucker who shot straight at Andre Hendrickson.
Rangers were dealt a major setback in the 24th minute when full-back Eugene Pitt suffered a suspected broken wrist after winning a header against Craig Smith and then falling heavily.
Play was held up for six minutes while Pitt received attention before eventually being taken to hospital by ambulance.
Rangers 'keeper Tucker collected a loose ball from the onrushing Michael Holdipp from a corner two minutes into injury time and then minutes later he was forced out towards the edge of his penalty area to make an important challenge on Chris Wright who injured himself in the process. The ball broke free to Mark Ray who lobbed the ball just over an empty goal from 25 yards.
Rangers enjoyed periods of pressure in the second half as Burt combined well with Corey Simmons on the left. The game reached a peak on the hour with Rangers still holding their own as the Colts defence was tested by the front line of Burt, Russell and Alfred Wolffe.
Ray followed team-mate Wilson -- a first-half booking for time wasting -- into referee Esten Curtis' book in the 66th minute for a foul on Wolffe who was about to race through on the right.
Derek Wright was cautioned in the 73rd minute for shoving Tucker who had challenged the Rangers 'keeper and then calmly knocked the ball into the empty net, though by that time the whistle had gone for the foul against Tucker.
Rangers defender Ryan Belboda was the fourth booking of the match for obstruction in the 78th minute.
After the deadlock was broken Colts came close to adding a second when substitute Jahmal Belboda volleyed just past the near post in the 86th minute.
