Media impact on kids to be probed
at a workshop at Warwick Secondary School next week.
The workshop, organised by western zone school counsellors, comes on the heels of Mount St. Agnes Academy principal Sister Judith Rollo's charge that society -- mainly parents and the media -- are to blame for the disruptive behaviour of students.
She questioned how it was possible for schools to make students believe that good academic records, adherence to civil law and fidelity in relationships were the fibre of a happy and successful life when the media emphasised material success more.
But one of the workshop's organisers, Mrs. Marilynn Smith, said the event was planned before Sister Judith's speech.
Mrs. Smith said the workshop's theme, "Media Mania: Junk Food for the Mind'', was the brainchild of Warwick Academy counsellor Ms Nancy Mattola.
The workshop is aimed at exploring the media's influence on the family, both positive and negative.
Representatives of the broadcast media and advertising industry have been invited to speak on its panel.
They are ZBM news director Mr. Rick Richardson, former ZBM announcer and Government Information officer Mrs. Tina Evans-Caines, former ZBM announcer and Prison Fellowship of Bermuda coordinator Mr. Glenn Caines, and Advertising Associates president Mr. John White.
Broadcasting Commissioner Mrs. Louise Jackson will moderate while prison psychologist Dr. Derrick Binns will be the "in house resident psychologist''.
Mrs. Smith said the panelists, who will speak for 15 minutes, have been asked to specifically address the impact of the media on the family; whether the media is out of control; and the role of the media in the future.
She stressed all children and adults, particularly parents, are invited to workshop which begins at 7.30 p.m. on November 20.
Education Minister the Hon. Gerald Simons is scheduled to meet with PTA executives the next day, November 21, to discuss corporal punishment and a number of other issues concerning students.
