Memorial fund set up for tragic horticulturist
memorial fund in his honour.
Scott Graham Pedro's mother Susie Hooper and father Roger Pedro have created an award in his name.
They opened a Strata account at the Bank of Butterfield earlier this week and this will operate in a perpetual manner as the Scott Graham Pedro Memorial Fund.
"This will be awarded to a student who is studying anything to do with horticulture, landscape design or the environment,'' said Ms Hooper.
It will be monitored by the Garden Club of Bermuda and be advertised later this year. Scott was a recipient of the Garden Club's Bayfield Clark Memorial Award.
Ms Hooper told The Royal Gazette : "Scott loved plants and the environment.
He could grow anything and fix anything to help it grow.'' Scott's natural ability encouraged him to pursue a degree in environmental studies at Pennsylvania's Temple University.
Said Ms Hooper: "He wanted to get his doctorate in environmental studies.'' Temple University had a memorial service for Scott and this spring will plant a tree in his memory. Scott also loved to write poetry and a friend of his who is a member of the Bermuda College's Literary Society organised a poetry reading earlier this week in his memory.
Many students from Temple faxed poems to the Island and Ms Hooper read two of her son's poems for him. Ms Hooper noted that the account was perpetual so the interest from the account would fund the award. Therefore the size of the scholarship would depend on donations and she urged people to make contributions. These donations can either be made directly -- the account number is (20)030-060-660498-200 -- or by mail to the Scott Pedro Memorial Award, P.O. Box 1378, Hamilton HMFX or by contacting Ms Hooper at 232-0386 or 295-2952.
