St. David's lit ablaze

The Boulevard Blazers continued their unbeaten run in the First Division yesterday at the expense of the fast-fading squad from St. David's.

Three second-half goals by the Blazers did away with any hopes that the east-enders had of improving their lowly position in the standings and thrust the visitors further into the thick of the title race.

Boulevard delighted the lively crowd right from the opening kick-off when they created a glorious chance that saw striker Kenny Hill ram a vicious volley against the St. David's crossbar with goalkeeper Dale Fox helpless.

National squad player Albert Smith was next but he too was denied when his well-taken shot sailed just high of the goal.

At the other end, the home team's offensive plays were sporadic at best, but surprisingly they could very easily have taken an early lead when the Boulevard defence lapsed.

Sean Smith drilled the ball from the right wing into the Blazers' six-yard box where it was met by a maze of players. As the ball bobbled around virtually on the goal-line Del Hollis could only manage to poke his shot wide of the target.

Later in the first half St. David's had a similar chance presented to them, which again was wasted by poor finishing. Eugene Crockwell found himself with the ball to the left of the goal. He drilled it low into the goalmouth and could only hang his head as he watched it roll slowly across the six-yard box with not a team-mate in sight.

Boulevard's superior passing game always put them a cut above their opponents and it looked like only a matter of time before they would find the net. A fine play on the left side had the ball touched by no less than four players and ended when Hill connected with a bouncing header that beat Fox and looked destined for the back of the net. Full-back Cal Richardson though was there to clear the ball off of his line.

The Blazers came into their own in the second half and for long spells pinned their opponents deep in their half of the field. Dwight Warren created havoc on the left wing and continually opened glaring holes in the noticeably tiring St. David's defence.

It was from a move started by Warren that the first goal came. His shot from just inside the penalty area immediately looked to be a problem for Fox and before the 'keeper could react, Eugene Smith tried to clear the ball but could only manage to steer it into his own net.

After finally managing to break the deadlock Boulevard ran at St. David's with added enthusiasm in a bid to consolidate their lead. Carlos Pearman drove a terrific shot from 30 yards that skimmed just wide of the right upright.

This was followed by a great shot by Warren that brought an equally great save by Fox. In fact it was Fox who kept the score somewhat respectable for the home team as he continually pulled off tremendous saves to deny the Blazers any more glory.

After a period of sustained pressure the Blazers struck again when two national squad players, Neil Robinson and Smith, combined on the left flank.

Smith lifted the ball to the near post where Robinson was on hand to guide it inside the upright.

The final goal was scored by Hill who had the easiest of tasks in lobbing the ball over the hapless 'keeper who had been deserted by his defenders late in the match.
