Fate removes foes from Martin's path

Brett Martin in the Heinz Bermuda Open Squash tournament as his second opponent in three days required hospital treatment due to a leg injury.

Martin's fellow countryman Simon Baker most recently played the role of the unfortunate victim when he turned an ankle during the second game of a quarter-final match between the duo and was forced to retire.

The first game had gone 15-8 in Martin's favour, but Baker had come back to play some of his best squash in the second and led 7-6 when forced off the court.

Earlier Jonathan Power of Canada made a forced withdrawal after being felled by a cycle accident on Thursday, giving Martin a first-round bye.

Adam Schreiber will line up as the next opponent for Martin in one of today's semifinal matches as he defeated Simon Frenz 3-2 in a match that must rate as one of the best ever witnessed locally.

Frenz, Germany's number one player, started superbly, taking the first set comfortably at 15-8, but Schreiber clawed his way back in the second, winning 15-13.

The third saw yet another close tussle won by Frenz 15-13. However, in doing so, he expended much energy, which allowed Schreiber to cruise through the final two sets 15-2, 15-7.

A marathon battle occurred between Pakistan's Zubair Jahan Khan and Michael Puertas of Canada as the pair matched wit and muscle for nearly two hours before Zubair's superior fitness showed and he was able to triumph 3-2.

In a match dominated by long rallies, Puertas managed some fine attacking squash, but was just not good enough to offset the talent and determination of Zubair, who won 15-12, 12-15, 15-6, 13-15, 15-4.

Yesterday's final match saw number two seed and defending champion Gary Waite oust Jamie Crombie 3-0 to set up a semifinal meeting with Zubair.

This match was closer than the score would indicate with the final two games decided by a single point. The referee was also kept busy with a multitude of lets and replayed points.

The tournament started on Saturday with a near upset occurring in the first round as Waite pulled back from the brink of defeat playing against hard-hitting Englishman Damian Walker.

Down 2-1 in games and with his opponent serving for the match at 14-11 Waite dug deep into his reserves, surviving three match points before levelling the score at 14-14. He then played immaculately while Walker seemed to panic and eventually took the game 17-14.

In the final game, Walker quickly ran out to a 5-2 lead and at 11-9 was just four points from victory, but Waite had other plans as he fought back to win 8-15, 15-12, 13-15, 17-14, 15-12 in one-and-a-half hours.

Crombie also was stretched to the limit during his 3-2 triumph over relative newcomer John Williams.

After surging to a commanding 2-0 lead, Crombie's game fell apart allowing Williams to close to 2-2 before the Canadian finally recovered to put him away 15-12 in the fifth. The final scoreline read 15-13, 15-9, 7-15, 10-15, 15-8.

Also successful in five was Frenz, who beat Craig Rowland 15-9, 15-10, 14-15, 12-15, 15-13.
