Super Sammy keeps Zebras in title chase
Proving again that he has lost none of his silky skills, veteran player-coach Sammy Swan had a hand in all three PHC goals during this Premier Division game at Somerset yesterday.
Spearheaded by Swan and the hard-working Raynel Lightbourne in midfield, the Zebras maintained their title chase, despite being forced to play with 10 men for the majority of the second half after defender Corey Dowling was sent off for intentional handling.
Swan netted PHC's first goal while the other two came from Lightbourne and Stanton Lewis. Janeiro Tucker got both goals -- one a penalty -- for Southampton, but he also missed a penalty.
There was no denying that PHC deserved the victory, especially after containing their opponents after Dowling departed.
Following a slow start, it was PHC who went ahead after 20 minutes, Swan steering the ball home from close range after good work by Lightbourne had created the opening.
Unsettled in defence, Southampton always looked vulnerable and it was left to centre-back Pernell Brangman to keep PHC at bay.
Southampton did little up front but if they were to score it became obvious that the goal would have to come from their most capable forward, Tucker.
After 36 minutes he caused problems in the Zebras' defence with a dribbling act which saw defender Dennis Wainwright make a desperate swipe from behind and referee Gary Cook immediately pointed to the spot, from where Tucker converted.
PHC, however, bounced back and went ahead after 44 minutes, this time Swan receiving a cross from Dowling and laying on a through ball for Lightbourne to slip by two defenders and score from close range.
Lightbourne went through the defence again after 55 minutes but this time his angled shot was put right into the chest of goalkeeper Randy Darrell.
A minute later Dowling handled while attempting to prevent a header by hard-working Nashon Smith from going into goal and the penalty that was awarded saw Tucker's shot saved by goalkeeper Crockwell.
But with Dowling sent off for the incident, Southampton weren't able to take full advantage of the one-player difference.
PHC saved their all-out attack until the last few minutes with Chris Furbert storming a 18-yarder over the bar after 87 minutes and Swan creating the pass for Lewis to get their third three minutes from time.
Tucker got a consolation goal for Southampton as the game went into injury time.
