Carr, Harkness cruise clear

three-under-par 68 at Port Royal yesterday to surge to a four-shot victory in the men's Bermuda Four-Ball Golf Championships.

The ladies title also went to a local pair, Sue Holland and Pat Morgan leading wire to wire to finish nine shots ahead of their closest rivals.

Carr and Harkness opened with a 68 last Thursday but then saw their lead whittled away by both defending champions Tim Carr (no relation) and Joey McRonald and visiting Americans Buddy Reed and Mike Hall.

But after a 77 on Friday and a 70 on Saturday, the first day leaders finished with another 68 yesterday to pull further clear of Carr and McRonald who posted a last round 69.

Carr and Harkness totalled 283, Carr and McRonald 287 and Reed and Hall 288.

Former winners Bill Pitt and Henry Ascento placed fourth on 282 after a consistent tournament in which they shot 72-74-74-72.

The men's net title went to Dennis Samuels and Cleveland Smith on 273, one shot ahead of Rudy Cann and Darren Swan with Richard Krupp and Barrie Lane third on 275.

Holland and Morgan were rarely challenged in the 54-hole women's event after taking a two shot lead with an opening day 80. They increased that advantage with an 83 on Saturday and finished with a 79 yesterday for a winning 242 total.

Young Ebonie Burgess and Gail Kozol had the best round of 75 yesterday to move up to second place overall on 251, seven ahead of third-placed Louise Payne and Ann Symonds (258).

Net honours went to Jan Bath and Mary Ellen Hurton on 213 followed by Timmie Farge and Wendy Salvia (216) and Teresa Taguchi and Katrin Burnie (217).
