The committee -- introduced as a liaison between Police and the community -- have organised a clean-up of areas considered to be home to illegal activities.

On Saturday all members of the community are invited to help at either the naval field opposite Arnold's Market on Main Road, Somerset or the area adjacent to Charing Cross Bar, at the junction of Main and Cambridge Roads.

These areas have long been of concern to residents, with suspected drug activity by youth on a regular basis.

The clean-up will involve collection of all garbage in the area and later on the Committee hopes to clear all overgrown vegetation with the cooperation of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Parks.

"Both of these areas were cleaned up a few years ago, which seemed to have a major effect,'' said Dr. George Shaw, member of the Sandys Sub-Committee.

The Western Community/Police Consultative Committee have met privately several times this year and held public meetings in Sandys and Southampton to hear residents' concerns. A public meeting in Warwick is planned for later this month.
