Port Royal send cougars crashing
Mid-table Devonshire Cougars slipped even further out of the promotion picture yesterday at White Hill field when they went down to bottom team Port Royal in division's only upset.
Top two teams Vasco and Southampton Rangers broke away from the pack after the next four teams in the standings all failed to win. The gap between Rangers and Wolves is now six points.
Port Royal, with just one win in their first eight matches, started the new year off on the right foot with a first-half goal from top scorer Nakia Smith and two more in the second half by Michael Bean and Mark DeMoura. Devon Brangman scored Cougars' lone goal.
Vasco 4, Paget 0 Vasco maintained sole possession of first place in the Second Division with this comfortable win at St. John's field. Derek Thomas opened the scoring in the sixth minute before Anthony Bailey added the second just two minutes later.
Carl Ainscough put the issue beyond doubt with a third in the 22nd minute and it stayed that way until the 85th minute when Ricky Mallory scored his 10th goal of the season from the penalty spot to make it 4-0. Larance Durham missed two second-half sitters, which would have given Vasco an even bigger victory.
Wolves 0, Southampton 3 Southampton Rangers kept marching on towards the First Division when they put some space between themselves and third-placed Wolves with this victory at Devonshire Rec. field.
The match started about an hour late because referee Oral Swan came from another game to officiate because no referee showed up.
Alfred Wolffe scored twice while college student Craig Darrell got the other.
Eugene Pitt had a penalty saved by Andre Smith in the second half.
Prospect 1, Social Club 1 This draw at Police field hurt both teams who were hoping to keep their slim promotion hopes alive.
Home team Prospect found the net through Stevie Lightbourne with Troy Lewis scoring for Social Club from the penalty spot.
Somerset Eagles 3, BAA 0 Everett Wellman scored twice for Somerset Eagles and then spoiled his day by being sent off late in the match as Eagles jumped ahead of Social Club and Devonshire Cougars into fifth place. Kenny Basden scored the other Eagles goal.
