Islanders sunk by Smith's hat-trick on top flight farewell
St. David's 1 Vasco 3 A hat-trick by striker Clay Smith gave visiting Vasco a comfortable victory in this Premier Division match at Lord's yesterday.
Last-placed St. David's, who were relegated many weeks ago, got their lone goal from Worrell Bean in a game that mid-table Vasco were firm favourites to win.
Smith struck in the 24th, 37th and 40th minutes, the second effort a brilliant one in which he controlled the ball, turned his defender and then masterfully chipped over Sydney Minors' head from an acute angle.
For St. David's, Bean struck in the 30th minute.
St. David's might be feeling a bit unlucky after they squandered numerous chances in the last 10 minutes of the game.
They were allowed into the game with momentum because centre back Diallo Sharrieff was ejected in the 70th minute, after his second bookable offence, leaving a big gap in defence.
Lionel Cann, Bean and substitute Roydell Pitcher all had their chances at goal but were unsuccessful either by having shots turned away by stand-by goalkeeper Dwight Basden or by shooting wide or high or finishing with feeble efforts.
The game saw referee Vance Campbell making his debut in the Premier Division and he did an exceptional job when faced with the extra burden of officiating without the help of any linesmen.
Vasco won the title last year, but finished this season bereft of silverware.
