Carriage owner hits out at corporation
idea of his horses having to wear diapers.
But as of yesterday there was nothing he could do about it.
Corporation of Hamilton officials refused to back down over the horse diaper ordinance even after carriage drivers came up with a plan to pay someone full time in the summer to clean horse droppings off the streets.
Last week Mayor the Rt. Wor. William Boyle told The Royal Gazette that the new ordinance was "long overdue''.
But Mr. Terceira disagreed yestterday.
"I don't see why we couldn't pay people who do not have a jobs to clean up the streets,'' Mr. Terceira said.'' "Professional nurses in hospital's clean up after humans, what's wrong with hiring someone to clean up after a horse.
"The people who are supposed to clean the streets do nothing. They sit in the shed and crawl out when it's time to knock off.
"I am not saying that it's right to leave the droppings in the street. Some of my horses are trained to go before they leave for town and when they come back.'' He added: "The Corporation made phone calls to cities in the US to see if the diaper devices worked for them and they said yes, but those horses are so drugged up that they don't even know where they are. They're drugged to keep them from fussing about having the diapers on.
"They also called the Department of Agriculture who also agreed that it was a good idea but they couldn't fit a diaper on a horse at gun point.'' Mr.
Terceira said it was "a joke'' to call what they have to put on their horses diapers.
"They are not diapers, they're bags, which will cause the horses to get chafe. The bags will also attract flies.''
