West-enders do Jimmie proud

them dedicating their victories to the memory of long-time Sandys Sports Club member and supporter James (Jimmie) Thorne who died over the weekend.

Racing at Granaway Deep in light to moderate winds, Challenger survived a close call at the halfway point to go on and take the BAA Cup in the first race.

Sailing along nicely, Challenger was nearly sunk by a sudden burst forcing the crew to `jump ship' and bail out the craft, allowing the rest of the fleet to catch up. But skipper Paul Fisher and his men managed to pick things up and hold on for the hard-fought win.

Elizabeth , with William White skippering, was second followed by Martin Siese in Echo .

The second race for the Whitney Cup was taken easily by Siese who left the field in his wake, winning by over four minutes.

The withdrawal of Contest for a rules infraction precipitated a battle for the second spot among Elizabeth, Challenger and Victory . And while the three countered each other, Siese pulled further away heading for the finish.
