Best names new national coaches
Football Association executives on whether the planned tour of Europe next year will still go ahead.
Best was finalising plans to have the Bermuda team tour Europe, including England where they were to train at his former club, West Hamand play against a West Ham XI.
However, the dates in April have not been finalised though the tour could not come after Best's three-year contract, which is not to be renewed.
"I'm still waiting to hear from the BFA executives, I was looking at April, depending on the first round of the World Cup,'' said Best yesterday.
He also disclosed that the first round, two leg World Cup qualifying match against the British Virgin Islands would take place on March 14 and 18, with the second match scheduled for Bermuda. Best will have just those two matches before his contract expires. "I've still got to do the best I can for the country,'' said Best. "I still have a job and have to perform to the best of my ability.'' Best also announced some coaching appointments. Senior national coach Robert Calderon will have Mark Trott as his assistant while Trott will be the head coach of the under-23s with Dennis Brown his assistant.
Gary Darrell, the man in charge of the Bermuda team during the 1992 World Cup qualifying, will take over the under-20s with David Furbert his assistant coach.
The under-13s have been split into two teams, the Red for the western half of the Island and the Blue for the east. Jack Castle is given responsibility for the Red team with Reggie Tucker Jr his assistant, while Neil Paynter will be in charge of the Blue team. Devarr Boyles and Paul Cann will help him.
Best has delayed naming the coaches for the under-15s until he has spoken to those he wants to offer the assignment.
"They are away at the present time,'' said Best who says funding has been provided to have the coaches compensated.
"On January 5, I will meet all the coaches to discuss team selection and goal objectives. I'm very pleased to have Gary Darrell overseeing the teams from under 13 to under 20. He will be the co-ordinator.'' Best also disclosed that former club coach Andrew Bascome has expressed interest in being involved at the national level.
