Basketball event raises $2,000 for Family Centre
A basketball tournament raised almost $2,000 for the Family Centre last weekend.
Approximately 350 spectators filled the CedarBridge Academy gymnasium on Saturday to watch the teams compete for cash prizes of up to $1,000.
Around 60 competitors and officials were involved in the Digicel-sponsored five-hour event, which featured a three-on-three tournament, a slam dunk competition and a three-point shoot-out.
The event was organised by Digicel boss Wayne Caines and his brother, police media relations officer Dwayne Caines.
Prizes were also handed out to audience members, with one lucky spectator winning an iPod mini in a random draw. But the big winner was the Family Centre. Ms Dismont said: “We were quite pleased to be chosen as the recipients of the Caines brothers’ fundraising 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney.
“I attended the event and thought it was one of the most important events that I have attended this year.
“It was rare to be among so many young men devoted to the skill and joy of playing basketball. It was not just a basketball tournament; it was an opportunity for any young man, or woman, to display their skills in front of an audience, and they were so happy to do so. It was heartening to see.
“I am very grateful to the Caines brothers for helping Family Centre and helping so many young people display their skills.”
