Dellwood Primary parents vow to dig in and fight Government

More than 100 Dellwood Primary School parents vowed to dig in their heels and fight Government's plan to send their children to Northlands in 1997.

Parents thronged at the doors and stood up along the walls because there were not enough seats and listened to Education Minister the Hon. Jerome Dill explain the reason for Government's decision to make Dellwood Primary a middle school and Northlands Secondary a primary school in two years' time.

Mr. Dill said that upgrading Northlands to make it suitable for primary aged students would cost $1 million, while it would cost $8 million to make Dellwood Primary a middle school because Northlands already had many facilities middle school children could use.

The Education Minister said the Roberts Avenue site -- which parents want Government to use for the middle school so that Dellwood can remain as it is -- would cost $22 million.

Consequently, Mr. Dill said that the best use of taxpayers' money would be achieved if Dellwood and Northlands were upgraded to serve Government's restructuring plan.

However, parents showed their overwhelming opposition to Government's plan.

Dellwood Primary PTA president Mrs. Amatullah Bashir asked those who were against the planned move to stand. Only members of the press and several cabinet members in attendance were left seated.
