And another couple were taken to hospital before the horse was caught and calmed down by its owner.

The horse was pulling a tourist carriage on Dundonald Street, near the Donut House when it was in collision with the motorcyclist.

The horse,broke free from the carriage and bolted along Dundonald Street, where it was in collision with an unmarked Police car. It continued onto Front Street where it was involved in another accident with car outside the Docksiders Pub.

Witness Mr. Mark Hall said: "The horse suddenly appeared from the car park across the road. It ran out into the road in front of the car.

"It saw the car and jumped, landing on the front windscreen. The passenger, a woman, leapt out but the man, driving, just stayed there. He seemed to be panicking. He finally rolled out of the door onto the sidewalk.''
