The rush hour accident, which involved an ambulance heading for the hospital, happened between temporary traffic lights on a section of road affected by long-term trenching work.

Police said the US Navy ambulance was on its way to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital when it was in collision with three cars going the other way.

People involved suffered minor injuries, a Police spokesman said.

Nearby residents are understood to be preparing a petition to Government calling for a speedy end to the controversial roadworks.
