What to wear?: Consultants help today's woman decide what to wear to the

Work clothes for women? The image conjured up is of a Margaret Thatcheresque navy blue, square shouldered suit with a knee-length skirt, flesh coloured stockings with a floppy bow at the neck of a blouse.

The thought alone is enough to make most women run screaming from the board room.

Men have it easy -- the suit or the shorts, and hey presto, ready for anything. But what do female high-flyers wear to work instead? The choices for women -- the skirt, the dress, the suit, or the trousers? -- are virtually endless.

Confusion in the wardrobe is a problem women would never dream of admitting to their male bosses or colleagues.

The fact remains that many fear they are either getting what they wear wrong or are lagging behind the times.

Now a new company in Bermuda is hoping to solve the dilemma by making clothes work for women.

First Impressions is made up of three professional image consultants, Crystal Ball, Karen Hendrickson and Colette Lundy.

With so much emphasis on presentation and packaging of goods and businesses in the market place, more and more people are scrutinising themselves and seeking professional help with companies like First Impressions.

"Many women in Bermuda these days are not sure what to wear to work,'' said Mrs. Lundy. "We no longer have the structured suit to rely on and some offices have a very casual dress-code. Finding the right look can be difficult.'' And Bermudian women have been queuing up to get their advice.

The demand has been such that the team has set up a seminar specially aimed at professional women.

First person: Page 33 Makeover expert "All About You'' is not only a day of practical advice on how to feel good inside and out, but also a day of luxury pampering with a long breakfast and lunch.

Already, more than 100 women have paid the $95 for the day at Sonesta Beach Hotel and Spa.

Mrs. Lundy said: "If you feel good, you look good. And it works the other way around as well. What you wear is important, but so is the way you feel inside.

You have to find a look you are comfortable with. This is what we help with.'' She added: "French women are taught from birth how to look the way they do.

They don't naturally know how to wear a scarf, or accessorise. We all can learn how to do this, learn the tricks of the trade.'' While the team would not reveal all their secrets before their first seminar, they believe that career success can depend on your image.

"You only have one chance to make a first impression,'' said Mrs. Lundy.

"And it may not be fair, but women are looked at differently than men. A man may come in looking dishevelled, but a woman looking the same way will be disapproved of more strongly. But hey, life is not fair.'' The team hopes to give the women they work with the tools that will allow them to create an image which is "polished inside and out''.

"We are not the fashion police. We are just here to help. Everyone has their own style and we can help you find it.'' Makeover expert "All About You'' is not only a day of practical advice on how to feel good inside and out, but also a day of luxury pampering with a long breakfast and lunch.
