of individuals'' believed to be responsible for a recent string of armed robberies.

Chief Insp. Carlton Adams yesterday told a Press briefing that one man is in custody following Wednesday's hold-up at Devonshire Liquors, and is cooperating with investigations into a rash of other robberies that have beset small businesses in the central parishes since June.

Police say the robbers actively case their next target, looking for businesses where security is lax, one person -- preferably female -- may be working and there is easy access to the cash register.

To date eight armed robberies have taken place, including two at Devonshire Liquors, one at the Clearview Guesthouse, Dub City Foods, and Hayward's Liquor Mart and the Paraquet Restaurant. The robbers, at times wearing masks, have brandished knives and machetes and threatened clerks.

Ch. Insp. Adams said at least six males between the ages of 22-30 are believed to be behind the robberies, and at least four of the suspects are known to Police.

"I wouldn't call them an organised gang, but our information indicates what we have is the re-occurring participation of several individuals,'' said Ch.

Insp. Adams, who admitted the suspects have not been picked up because of a lack of evidence.

"Indications are they are willing to continue until they are caught in the act. We know drugs are a motivating factor; these people are pursuing cash any way they can and small businesses tend to be the easiest targets,'' he said.

Police are warning small businesses to be more vigilant and report suspicious characters, to remove excess cash from the premises, to ensure security cameras are operating and loaded with film, and perhaps even consult with some of the Island's security firms.

Ch. Insp. Adams also stressed that in the event of a robbery, the store should be closed and customers excluded from entering the crime scene.
