Improve Railway Trail May 14, 2001
My wife and I just returned yesterday from our eighth visit to Bermuda and despite the rains, we enjoyed being there, including the day we spent biking on the Bermuda Railway Trail. But we were some what aghast at the condition of the trail, as it is full of potholes and is generally in very bad shape, particularly the area in Paget and Southampton.
In fact, we have seen a steady deterioration of the trail over recent years, which is difficult to understand as it is a tremendous asset for bikers and walkers both.
I realize you were having a "trail cleanup day'' last Saturday which presumably took care of the litter, but why the Tourist Bureau can't do something about the potholes and/or erecting a footbridge over the three gullies is beyond us.
Perhaps your newspaper could champion this cause, maybe along with one or more service clubs such as the Lions or Rotarians.
The potential for the trail is immense, and I would hope that this letter will raise public awareness so that some positive action will be taken to improve it.
