Senators meeting today appear to have too much else on their plate.

Last night Government Senate leader the Hon. Gerald Simons said about 10 pieces of legislation still needed to be discussed. These were on top of the Budget debate which would run until 5.30 p.m., he said.

Meanwhile, Independent Senator Alf Oughton's proposed amendment to the Independence Referendum Act has been reworded.

On Monday, Government Senators said the proposal was "ambiguous''.

"The words have been slightly changed, although the intent remains the same,'' said Sen. Oughton, who has consulted a lawyer.

The amendment would ensure a referendum is decided by more than 50 percent of voters on the electoral register.

Progressive Labour Party Senators have already signaled their backing for it.

Senate President the Hon. Albert Jackson has also voiced support, although Government hopes to win him round.

The proposed amendment's success or failure could hinge on the vote of Independent Sen. Norma Astwood.
