themselves. Government Building Control Officer Mr. Richard Krolak offered this message when he addressed Hamilton Rotary Club this week.

Mr. Krolak has helped to implement many of the plans which provide access for the disabled.

But he says he can see a whole new perspective on access for the physically handicapped, blind and deaf, simply by putting himself in their shoes. "We should be aware that being disabled can only be a heartbeat away -- as Margaret Carter would say.'' He said he took a whole new look at access to stairways in buildings when he thought of what it would be like if he had a disability.

Mr. Krolak was speaking during Access Awareness Week in Bermuda. He was explaining to the Rotarians how businesses were now asked to provide access for the disabled. He pointed out that almost every business and organisation was now told to provide suitable access whereas in the past it had been voluntary.

And he noted the good work done in Bermuda in places such as City Hall, Belco and Telco head offices, the Bermuda College and the Airport, as well as the many kerbside ramps.
