Hornets sting Blue Sox
softball action Wednesday night as they humbled the league leaders 8-2.
A stellar pitching performance by Steven Perinchief limited the Blue Sox (7-1) to just six hits and although Hornets garnered only seven hits of their own they made the most of them.
Leading the way for Hornets, whose record moved to 3-2, was Anthony Mouchette with two hits and one RBI. John Ray went one better, batting in two runs while Allen Richardson's contribution in four at bats was an inside the park home-run in the seventh inning.
In fact Hornets sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh as they exploded for all their runs off losing pitcher Robert Dill, feeling the effects of a hamstring pull. The loss dropped Blue Sox to 7-1 on the season, while Hornets leapfrogged over North Village Devils into third place.
Taking advantage of this setback for the leaders, Warwick (5-3) moved back to within two games of the top spot courtesy of a 8-7 win over Village (2-5).
Cruising along with an 8-2 lead, Warwick received a scare when their opponents rallied for five runs in the fifth inning. However, winning pitcher Vagunel Smith was able to buckle down an avoid further damage, enabling his side to hold on.
Dane Brown went three-for-four for the winners as did Dean A. Williams for Village. The losing pitcher was Derick Davis.
The night's other game was a slow pitch contest resulting in Bud notching their fourth win of the season against one defeat, as they hammered G/C Inc 16-7. Bud thus continue to head the `A' Division, while G/C Inc (2-2) stand third.
