Whitter topples top seed

main draw at the ITF 14-and-under Junior Development Tennis Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad this week.

In the first round of the main draw on Wednesday Whitter defeated top seed, Faron Carter of Barbados, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the next round of a tournament which features 12 countries from the Caribbean region.

However, in yesterday's semi-final Whitter lost to the fourth seed from Aruba, Clifford Gild, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Whitter's three team-mates all failed to make the main draw.

Ryan Swan just missed out when he placed 13th overall after round robin qualifying matches on Monday and Tuesday. The top 12 players went through to the main draw so Swan had to settle for a place in the consolation draw where he is seeded number one.

And yesterday he won both of his matches to qualify for the consolation final, beating Trinidad's David Mohammed 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Surinam's Rashil Vandiek 7-5, 6-4.

Sisters Sasha and Zoe Fisher both lost in the consolation yesterday.

Sasha was beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Trinidad's Laura Marin and then went down 6-0, 2-6, 6-7 to Martell Sandrick.

Zoe was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Aruba's Sylvia Gildhorn and by St. Vincent's Ann Marie Jack 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Whitter and Swan teamed up to beat Theo Brown and Brian Simons 6-1, 6-1 and will now play in the quarter-finals.

The Fisher sisters were defeated by Kiralise Leung and Arienna Marshall 6-0, 6-1.
