Human rights campaigners will flock to the House of Assembly today in a bid to get MPs to "Get Up, Stand Up'' for human rights.

The UBP and PLP representatives will be called on to put their names on the dotted line to show their commitment to the principles laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Amnesty International Bermuda section director LeYoni Junos said December 10, 1998, was the 50th anniversary of the signing of the declaration and today's event was part of the year's ongoing celebrations.

The personal pledge MPs are being asked to sign today as they leave Parliament on their lunch break reads: "I promise to do everything in my power to ensure that the rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights become a reality throughout the world.'' The celebrations were kicked off on February 16 when some 30 prominent Bermudians from a variety of organisations gathered on the steps of City Hall and put their signatures to the pledge.

Today's date was selected as the ideal time to canvass the MPs because it marks the 54th anniversary of the Women's Suffrage Act which became law on May 15, 1944.

This event will be commemorated by Amnesty International on May 31.

All the signatures will be collected in Bermuda and from around the world and be presented to the United Nations on December 10, 1998, which is the date of the official 50th anniversary.
