Implement drug policy, Edness tells employers
called on employers to implement a drug policy in their places of business.
Mr. Edness made the call as he opened the Worldwide Lessons in Leadership Series yesterday, presented by the Bermuda Employers Council.
The long-serving Cabinet Minister said, "Only by all of us working together to rid our country of the menace of drug abuse will we succeed. To do less will allow this scourge to destroy our precious country.'' Mr. Edness remarked how the labour environment here had endured a sometimes painful past but he challenged business leaders to promote the return of simple work ethics: commitment, honesty and loyalty.
He said that the reduction in labour disputes over the past five years was a testimony to the employee, employer, government partnership.
He said, "We have learned how to come together, share views and make some decisions together. We may not necessarily agree on everything, but there is sufficient common ground for us to move forward together on most issues.
"As business leaders of tomorrow you have an enormous responsibility.
Bermuda's business climate will depend on you. Whether it is one of confrontation or harmony, distrust or respect will be determined largely by how you fulfil your role as leaders and guide others to fulfil their responsibilities.'' Mr. Edness was encouraged by recognising representatives at yesterday's opening session from a cross section of the business community.
He said, "You have come today to learn together what it takes to be leaders in the ever-changing, unpredictable business world of the 21st Century.
"It is evident by your presence that you realise that yesterday's methods may no longer bring success in tomorrow's world. By your presence here today, it is evident that you want to be prepared for tomorrow's world with whatever challenges it may bring.'' He advocated a change in attitudes, saying that no one was doing any favours by just showing up for work. He wanted to encourage value for money and added that a successful Bermuda was a shared responsibility.
Mr. Edness said, "Help create a kinder, friendlier work environment where all views are sought and respected and where everyone, on all levels, can feel confident that some of their personal goals will be met.
"The rewards will be immeasurable.'' DRUGS DGS BUSINESS BUC
