Pointing out the "failures'' of the ruling United Bermuda Party during a weekly Progressive Labour Party press conference, Shadow Finance Minister Mr.

Eugene Cox said a PLP Government would focus on training and re-training Bermudians to meet the demands of the job market in the future.

Mr. Cox said Government should have seen the recession as a chance for "thorough stocktaking'' and "a window of opportunity'' to have the Bermudian workforce "retooled, trained and re-trained for the commercial workplace''.

But instead, he said, "there has been a litany of broken promises from this Government'' and Labour and Immigration Minister the Hon. Irving Pearman "has already said that he will review the moratorium on work permits next year''.

"We all welcome the upsurge in insurance business and the increased opportunities that should result from Bermuda being touted internationally as an arbitration centre and a centre for international business and offshore trust,'' Mr. Cox said.

"However, all the jobs in the world will not help if we do not see a trickle-down effect so that our sons and daughters are better placed to fill some of these jobs.'' A PLP Government "would be committed to action'', he added. "However, we would need to conduct a thorough review and stocktaking of the various Government Ministries and policies, especially having inherited a legacy of failures''.

The National Liberal Party announced yesterday that its spokesperson for Health and Environment Ms Cheryl Pooley would run in St. George's South in the upcoming general election and former chairman Mr. Graeme Outerbridge would run in Smith's South as he did in the last election.
