Secretary of the Corporation of Hamilton, Mr. Roger Sherratt announced last week that three areas of the city would be used for shoppers, until Christmas.

Two hour waiting limits were imposed on the covered area of the Number One Shed on Front Street (52 spaces), 50 spaces behind City Hall and 12 parking bays on Dundonald Street between Court Street and Union Street.

People are allowed two hours parking for a dollar in the first two areas, but must leave and cannot return within a 24 hour period after one visit.

Anyone breaking the rules by staying at any of the sites for more than two hours will be given parking tickets with fixed penalties of $30.

Mr. Sherratt said that the scheme had been introduced to stop office workers taking all the car parking spaces leaving no room for shoppers.

The scheme was backed by local businesses who have since benefitted by its success with a flood of customers reaching their doors.
