Goal-happy Village run riot

Eight shots found the back of the net and there could have been several more in favour of Premier Division league challengers North Village as they devoured Commercial League minnows Lobster Pot in this FA Cup quarter-final at Devonshire Rec. last night.

Pot went into the tie as potential giant-killers but it was a threat that never materialised as Village dominated from the opening whistle.

The Red Devils could have comfortably reached double figures had Dwight Warren made better use of a string of chances that came his way.

Heavily favoured Village underlined their supremacy early in the match, taking a 1-0 lead after just 58 seconds through Kentoine Jennings. And four more goals came before half-time -- sandwiched between a slew of misses.

With Village dominating, the goals came thick and fast from Warren after five minutes, Kevin Jennings after 11 minutes, Marlon Dill (penalty) after 36 minutes and Jamaul Boyles after 39 minutes.

But Pot, although clearly rocked after falling behind to two early goals, displayed some fighting spirit and were presented with two chances of their own in the opening half.

Troy Berkeley, their most inventive forward, chipped a shot just over goal from 18 yards after seven minutes when they trailed 2-0 and then the same player watched as his accurate cross from the left after 12 minutes was smartly headed towards goal by Jim McLaren, goalkeeper Gladwin Edness pulling off a brilliant diving save to his right.

However, Pot endured further misery in the second half with their defence continually stretched.

Kentoine Jennings, who headed a ball off the bar after 29 minutes, put Village 6-0 ahead after 48 minutes.

The underdogs were unlucky soon after when Enda O'Reilly slipped through on a breakaway only to see Edness rush off his line to block the shot from close range.

But that's all Lobster Pot had to offer as Village took over, with chance after chance wasted as their over anxious forwards failed to capitalise on a number of openings.

Kimande Binns made it 7-0 after 65 minutes and Jah Samuels rounded out the scoring in the 82nd minute.

Village finished with 10 players after Randy Spence was sent off for a second bookable offence after 84 minutes.
