Bermuda in extra friendly mood
Young Kenya with a surprise fixture against rivals Bangladesh today.
West Africa, who Bermuda open the ICC Trophy tournament against on February 13, did not arrive as scheduled yesterday. So Bermuda agreed to fill their place in the friendly schedule against Bangladesh, semifinalists in 1990, at Ruaraka Sports Club.
The Asian nation will be no strangers as it was a defeat to them that confirmed Bermuda's eliminatiom four years ago in the first round in Holland.
"The main reason we accepted the match is that most of the bowlers are spinners in the Bangladesh team,'' said captain Albert Steede. "They are good competition, and we looked at it in all factors. If we are to meet them later in the tournament it would be in the semifinals or final, so it would be good psychologically to play them now and defeat them.'' This extra match means that Bermuda will be in action on successive days, with Uganda the opponents tomorrow at Nairobi Jaffery.
The wisdom of today's match is further accepted after Uganda's third straight defeat yesterday.
Tournament favourites Holland made 323 for nine and tumbled Kenya's westerly neighbours out for 126.
Back-to-back matches have also meant that Bermuda have more freedom in selection.
Teams were announced last night for both matches with only captain Steede, wicket-keeper Dean Minors, number three batsman Clay Smith and leg-spinner Bruce Perinchief to be retained for each weekend game.
Reflecting on Wednesday's match after a rigorous training session yesterday, Steede said: "Winning our first match boosted us psychologically.'' Steede had special praise for batsman Charlie Marshall and Clay Smith, who rebuilt the innings on Wednesday after Bermuda were 17 for two in the fourth over.
The pair added 77 for the third wicket before Smith was out for 44. Marshall, who battled the altitude problems at great length, went on to a fine 100.
And it was with Marshall's breathing problems in mind that the team planned a session of running one's, two's and three's in rapid succession at the end of yesterday's training.
"They must be congratulated because they did an excellent job,'' said Steede of Wednesday's early batting stars. "Our goal is to have someone in the first three or four get a big score. Charlie batted well and got stuck in and made it easier for those who came afterwards.'' The following are teams for today and tomorrow against Bangladesh and Uganda: Today: Dexter Smith, Albert Steede, Clay Smith, Charlie Marshall, Noel Gibbons, Jeff Richardson, Dean Minors, Kenny Phillip, Quinton Burch, Bruce Perinchief, Del Hollis. Reserves: Clevie Wade, Allen Richardson.
Saturday: Allan Richardson, Albert Steede, Clay Smith, Arnold Manders, Jeff Richardson, Clevie Wade, Dean Minors, Kenny Phillip, Quinton Burch, Bruce Perinchief, Del Hollis. Reserves: Anthony Edwards, Terry Burgess.
