Carr, Harkness storm into three-shot lead
showed his intention to make amends on the opening day of the Bermuda Four-Ball golf championships at Port Royal yesterday.
Carr and new partner Paul Harkness recorded a sizzling three-under-par 68 to lead by three strokes over defending champions Tim Carr and Joey McRonald.
It was Tim Carr and McRonald who beat Gary Carr (no relation) and former Amateur Strokeplay champion Mark Dupuy in sudden death last year after both pairs had finished the regulation 72 holes tied on 285.
Dupuy has since left the Island and moved to Canada.
Tied in third place after the first round are former winners, Port Royal manager Bill Pitt and club employee Henry Ascento, and visiting scratch handicappers Buddy Reed and Mike Hall who returned rounds of one-over-par 72.
Another two shots back are St. George's Golf Club manager Max Atherden and Ian Page, and Michael Tavares and Dennis DeSilva.
In the net division, three teams are tied on 66 -- Carr and Harkness, Tavares and DeSilva, and Norman Wilson and Paul Dickson.
Today sees the second round of the men's tournament while the ladies begin their 54-hole championship.
Last year's ladies winner Dott Spiro is teaming up with Joan McPherson as her 1999 partner Elizabeth White is not returning.
