Collision causes 4 p.m. traffic jam
Two large tractor trailers hauling steel loads were involved in a smash-up yesterday on Crow Lane, with one of them having to be written off after a car went through the Northern roundabout. No one was injured.
Traffic on its way out of Hamilton was backed up for 20 minutes.
Two Correia Construction vehicles were part of a three vehicle convoy, an escort vehicle and two tractor trailers, carrying a load of steel to Dockyard.
The tractor trailer at the rear of the convoy collided with a steel girder on the tractor trailer in front of it after the lead tractor trailer stopped to avoid hitting a car transiting through the roundabout.
Jane Correira, of Correira Construction said the damage to the rear trailer was "extensive" but could not put a figure on it.
"We were escorting and the lead truck," she said, "the escort truck, had to stop near the round-a-bout because a car on the round-a-bout wouldn't stop."
Police took a statement from us, attended the scene and helped us get the broken truck off of the road and that was the end of it.
We had the same problem on Sunday night when we were moving four tractor trailers – we have a real problem keeping people off and over.
We're trying to respect the rules of the road and carry out what we're meant to do."
Damage to the front end and windshield of the trailing tractor trailer resulted.
While thankful no one was hurt, Mrs. Correira pleaded with the public to exercise caution when coming across the special escorts.
"Because of the volume of stuff that's coming off the docks at the moment, we are having to make a lot of moves and have found that people just do not pay attention to escorts," she stated.
