AT A GLANCE
Health bosses screened 112 people aged 17 to 84 during three days of screening at TCD. Results included:
• 66 percent of people were overweight or obese (compared with 61 percent in the Bermuda Health Survey)
• 47 percent were obese (compared with 23 percent in the health survey)
• 19 percent were overweight (compared with 40 percent in the health survey)
• 24 percent had an elevated blood sugar level
• 23 percent had a waist measurement putting them at risk of developing Type Two diabetes
Results from the accompanying questionnaire included:
• 4 percent of obese people described themselves as obese
• 47 percent of people knew that obesity means fat beyond overweight
• 94 percent believed obesity is a health hazard
• 17 percent knew only 100 calories a day more than your body needs leads to a ten pound weight gain in a year
• 54 percent knew experts recommend 30 to 60 minutes exercise a day
• 40 percent believed they were at risk for developing Type Two diabetes
