Lindo's Challenger off insulin after 100 day effort
There is no story that demonstrates the power of exercise as compellingly as Steve Easton's.
This is a man who at his heaviest weighed almost 300 pounds and was diagnosed as diabetic.
Four years ago Steve was involved in a serious traffic accident and dropped to half his weight because the extreme pain stripped him of his appetite. His lack of activity also stripped him of his muscle, a story of overall despair in poor health.
"I slept no more than two hours a night for a year because the pain was so intense; I had no interest in exercise. My muscles began to atrophy but it hurt too much to exercise," recalls Steve Easton, owner/manager of Just Platinum recording studio.
Until one day when a stranger advised him that no matter how much it hurt he would need to walk to get better. He suggested that Steve was already feeling pain so why not walk in pain instead of lying around with it.
Steve had tried specialists and taken so many medications that he started to walk as a last-ditch effort for relief and within a year he was in the gym with less pain and accelerating his rehabilitation.
This is the same Steve Easton who just completed the televised Lindo's 100 Day Challenge. His weight had crept back up to 219, that's 45 lbs. over his ideal weight and as a diabetic he is aware of the importance of living healthy. "It's your health or your life," he says seriously. "You need to make the time."
Now after 100 days with personal trainers Sharlene and Munro, Steve is meeting his goals: to reach his ideal weight and regain control of diabetes.
He proved to himself and doctors eight years ago that he could kick insulin and prevent diabetes after he was diagnosed with the disease.
At that time he took matters into his own hands for three months after attending diabetes education classes and began to cycle and walk every day.
In that time he "regained control" of the disease and no longer needed medication.
With the help of the 100 Day Challenge he has done it again and has been off insulin for a month now. He can't thank them enough.
Never quite recovered from the accident, the Challenge has restored Steve's confidence and body strength.
"This has kick-started my new life, I'm looking forward to running again. The trainers stressed the importance of strengthening your core and abs for better back support and I am much further along today than I would have been if it wasn't for the trainers, the gym and the Lindo's Challenge."
He is certain that he will continue exercising for the multiple benefits of not needing insulin and the feeling of wellness that it provides.
"Bermuda is the ideal place to exercise, the fresh air, the sunshine, the healthy drinking water," he says enthusiastically. "Our favourite pastime as a society is to go out and enjoy eating, the majority of ill health is caused by the things that we do to our self."
A word of advice to others who want to kick-start their life,
"Find a personal trainer, they tailor the program to your lifestyle and make it fit around you by tuning in to your strengths. Then get a workout partner or a little team, workout with friends if you want to stick with it."
