Impaired driver banned
A Warwick man admitted to drunk driving and speeding when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
Richard Mwanzia, of Forest Hill Drive, was arrested on March 16 after officers saw him speeding on Crow Lane and around the roundabout onto Trimingham Hill.
The court heard from Crown counsel Robert Welling that at 3 a.m., officers were on patrol at a bus stop on Crow Lane checking vehicles when they attempted to stop a car driving at 70 kph, almost colliding with other cars.
The vehicle kept going, swerving over the yellow line and was eventually stopped.
The 30-year-old smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet and almost fell down several times. He told officers he had been drinking in Hamilton and "was just trying to get home".
Mwanzia failed the breathalyser test but his results were not given in court.
Asked if he had anything to say, Mwanzia said: "I deeply regret what I did. I am sorry."
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave him a $1,000 fine, a one-year diving ban and ten demerit points.
