Students given taste of insurance at Marsh/Guy Carpenter road show

Students were given an insight into the world of insurance by Marsh and Guy Carpenter & Company LLC courtesy of a three-month road show held at Bermuda's public and private schools.

The initiative, which is in its second year, uses interactive presentations to introduce pupils to the re/insurance brokerage and captive management industries and the careers available there.

The road show kicked-off in January at CedarBridge Academy, while Bermuda College, Warwick Academy, The Berkeley Institute, Saltus and Bermuda High School also opened their doors to the Marsh/Guy Carpenter team.

The sessions gave students a taste of the basics of re/insurance, including dynamic role-plays demonstrating the real-world scenarios typical among risk managers, brokers, insurance underwriters and officers. Marsh and Guy Carpenter specialists then fielded questions from the students and outlined the qualifications needed by young career-seekers to become a broker or captive insurance officer.

"These sessions have been such an excellent way to engage students and give them a glimpse of what the insurance and reinsurance industries are about," said Andrea Simmons, ACII, vice-president of Marsh Captive Solutions. "Bermudian students are lucky to have so many career opportunities available to them. Our goal with this programme is to make the students aware of the options in the insurance and reinsurance industries so they can make informed decisions about their futures."

Brenton Burgess, head of guidance and student services at The Berkeley Institute, said students appreciated the opportunity to talk candidly with the Marsh/Guy Carpenter team, adding that they walked away from the sessions with a new understanding of the re/insurance industry.

"Berkeley's 'Future Friday' ongoing lunch-and-learn series provides important opportunities for our students to gain insight into career areas of their choice," said Mr. Burgess. "The Marsh and Guy Carpenter team is always willing to take part.

"Students feel comfortable interacting with their professionals and are able to ask questions and receive informative answers, which in turn can guide them towards making future career decisions."
