Opti sailors miss out in team Worlds

Bermuda's young sailors notched one victory against two defeats as they failed to challenge for honours in the team championships at the Optimist Worlds in Montevideo, Uruguay this week.

But the five teenagers will leave South America with their heads held high after a number of promising individual performances.

Having qualified for the team event by placing among the top 16 in a fleet of 50 countries, Bermuda's team of Jordan and Jason Saints, James Anfossi, Joshua Greenslade and Haley Powell defeated Italy but then were eliminated after suffering losses to Ecuador and Argentina. Overall winners were Singapore.

However, in individual competition, the Island's sailors again showed their potential with four of them placing in the top 50 in an entry of 229.

Jordan Saints led the way, placing 29th overall after three top ten finishes including a second. Greenslade, who won one of his races, placed 37th, Anfossi 42nd and Jason Saints 46th. Powell finished 180th.
