Microsoft founder's mega yacht here
One of the world's most luxurious super yachts is calling Bermuda home for the next few weeks.
Octopus, the fifth largest super yacht in the world is owned by the co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates' former partner, Paul Allen. It has been docked at Penno's Wharf since Tuesday and is the second largest yacht not owned by a head of state.
The pleasure vessel cost Mr. Allen more than $200 million, costs about another $20m a year to maintain and has a crew of 60, including several former US Navy SEALS.
She is 414 feet long with two helicopters on the top deck, one in back and one in front, and a 63 foot tender docked in the transom.
Delivered to Mr. Allen in 2003, Octopus has a pool on board on one of the upper decks – and seven boats.
She also has a ten-man submarine and a remote controlled vehicle for studying the ocean floor. The submarine can sleep eight people for up to two weeks underwater.
There is also a side hatch which forms a dock for jet skis.
Arriving from Barbados with the intention of staying a month, Octopus is a motor yacht which was registered in the Cayman Islands.
She was designed by Espen Oino Naval Architects and built by German shipbuilder Lurssen in Bremen and HDW in Kiel.
She has travelled all over the world including stops in Southern France, Italy, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, the French Polynesian, Greece, Panama and now Bermuda.
Mr. Allen, worth an estimated $20 billion, is the fifth richest man in America and owns two other monster yachts called Tatoosh and Meduse.
The Mercer Island, Washington resident co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1975. He left the company in 2000 and sold 68 million shares. He still owns 138 million shares.
Mr. Allen also owns pro basketball's Portland Trailblazers and American football's Seattle Seahawks.
