Revs to visit Island in February

Khano Smith's New England Revolution will bring their star-studded side to Bermuda for a training camp next month to prepare for their upcoming MLS season.

Last year's beaten MLS Cup finalists will spend a week on the Island with at least two friendly matches scheduled between February 13 and 21. They will then head to Cancun, Mexico, to continue their trip.

The Revs have made Bermuda their number one pre-season destination in recent years and recruited Smith during their first visit in 2005, after the former Dandy Town man impressed coach Steve Nicol while playing for the national team.

Revs' director of public relations Lizz Summers said although the team's opposition had not been finalised she expected the format to mirror that of previous years, which has seen them lock horns with the national team.

Keith Tucker's team will be in the midst of their World Cup qualifying campaign when the Revs arrive and could view a match with the MLS outfit as the ideal warm-up ahead of their away leg against the Cayman Islands in March.

When contacted yesterday, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) general secretary David Sabir said although New England Revolution had not contacted them he believed a fixture could interest both parties.

However, Bermuda Hogges co-owner Paul Scope said as it stood they would not be playing Revolution, thus paving a path for the national team to organise a friendly. But he added Hogges would be 'ready and waiting' should the national team be unable to meet Steve Nicol's side for any reason.

"It's only right the national team has first dibs at setting up friendly dates with New England Revolution as they will be right in the middle of their World Cup qualifying," he said.

"Part of the reason we set up the Hogges was to help improve the national team, and I'm sure Keith Tucker will be keen to have his team involved in games against the Revs before the away leg against Cayman.

"The Hogges will benefit anyway as most of our players will be involved with the national team and any friendly matches will also give us a chance to see them in competitive action 0before our season starts. Our players will be back in training with us by then."

Last year saw local promoter SetPlay organise Revs' trip to the Island, where they faced the national team and David Beckham's LA Galaxy. The former England skipper did not feature as he was still under contract with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.

The Revs, who have been beaten finalists in the last three MLS Cups, will play their nemesis of the past two years Houston Dynamo in their 2008 season opener on March 29 at Gillette Stadium.

Meanwhile, their attacking midfielder Andy Dorman will join Scottish Premier Division side St. Mirren on an 18-month contract. The 25-year-old had been part of Steve Nicol's team for the past three seasons, but is keen to return to the UK.
