Come on men - help our young

SOS appeal to men: Mirror volunteer Lorna McGowan at a press conference at Cabinet during which Minister Of Social Rehabilitation Dale Butler appealed for more male volunteers.

Social Rehabilitation Minister Dale Butler has appealed for men to come forward to help the Mirrors Programme which aims to put wayward youngsters back on track.

The Mirrors team has trained 28 people to act as life coaches for up to 35 youths in a nine-month programme – but only five are males.

The programme was launched by Government earlier this year to force at-risk 15 to 18-year-olds to confront their cynicism and take responsibility for their own lives.

Mr. Butler said: "We are appealing to the males in Bermuda to come and support this great opportunity to enhance the life of our youth."

One who is already on board is Jonathan Clipper.

He said orientation had gone well as volunteers got a feel for what the youngsters would be taught.

"It basically comes down to a belief that you are what you say you are – if I say I am going to do something I will do it. I won't make an excuse, I will do it. These young people are commiting to making significant changes in their lives.

"It is not easy for them but we are there as commited partners and basically my word is my bond."

Fellow volunteer Lorna McGowan said Bermuda's youth were worth the effort and once the first batch had made the changes they could help persuade others it was wise to follow suit. The programme puts the young people in a seven-day residential programme at Willowbank Hotel under the supervision of the programme organisors.

They are joined for the last two days by volunteers who will mentor the particapants once the residential element is over.
