Logie: We can win one-dayers if we apply ourselves

National cricket coach Gus Logie remains optimistic his team can salvage some degree of success on their current tour of Holland.

Bermuda take on hosts Netherlands in Rotterdam today for the first of two official ODIs before departing for Ireland next Tuesday, with coach Logie confident his team can rise to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

The former West Indies batsman made it no secret exactly what he felt about his team's lack of application and overall level of commitment after their innings and 44 run Intercontinental Cup loss to the Dutch in Amstelveen earlier in the week. Yet he insists that with the proper mental approach and resolve the tourists can obtain favourable results against a Dutch squad bolstered by the return of Essex batsman Ryan ten Doeschate.

"If we can raise our game to the level that we are capable of playing at, then I am confident that we can win these two games. There's no two ways about that, and this is what we are aiming to do," Logie declared.

"I think the most important thing to do now is continue to highlight the positives and encourage the guys to do better. But the reality is the players have a responsibility to themselves and the team."

Skipper Irving Romaine, left arm spinner Dwayne Leverock and fast bowler George O'Brien Jr. all excelled against the Dutch earlier this week. Romaine completed his second Intercontinental Cup century (103) to lead by example with the bat in Bermuda's first innings by scoring an unbeaten 103, while Leverock snatched three wickets and chipped in with a dogged 52 in the tourist's second innings.

Quickie O'Brien, who proved that he does belong at this level, bowled superbly to bag a first five-wicket haul on tour.

"It's nice to see individuals stepping up as it gives hope to others," Logie acknowledged. "But we need to combine everything together with everyone performing at the same time if we are to make any impact in these two matches.

"You can't have just one person scoring runs and another taking wickets in one innings - it's just not going to work and we are not going to win many matches like that.

But I think our players will feel more confident having made some runs or taken wickets and now seen what the opposition is all about.

"We do not have any less ability than anybody else and in some cases I think we have even more. But we have to begin thinking more because the game itself is a thought process. That's all we have to do - think situations through instead of falling short for not thinking about the game."
