Better late than never for North Village

Newly crowned Dudley Eve champions Wolves will need to cut short their celebrations when they step out against defending league champions Dandy Town in what promises to be tomorrow's match of the day as Premier League action resumes. The two clubs clash at BAA with Wolves determined to build on their Christmas success and a well-rested Town eager to get back into the thick of the title race, having missed out on Dudley Eve qualification.

As North Village coach Scott Morton would no doubt agree, the race for the Premier League title is a marathon not a sprint.

Fifth in the table after a slow start confidence is high at the club after thrashing Devonshire Cougars twice within the space of a week.

Village, bolstered by the availability of college student Ralph Bean, saw off Cougars 4-1 in the league last time out and repeated the feat in the Friendship Trophy on Wednesday.

Morton said those performances represented the Village team he knew and not those that had gone before.

Tomorrow they will have a chance to prove it is not a false dawn when they take on Devonshire Colts.

“I feel that if we can maintain our discipline as well as we have during our last two matches then we shouldn’t encounter too many problems,” said Morton. “The way we have been playing lately is what I have been expecting from them since the beginning of the season, but like they say, it’s always better late than never.”

Colts, though, will be no pushover.

They are coming off a convincing 3-0 win against St. George’s, which saw them go clear at the top by three points.

Meanwhile, league champions, Dandy Town, who brought a swift end to Wolves’ Dudley Eve trophy celebrations with a 2-1 win last weekend, take on Somerset Trojans — themselves 3-0 winners over PHC last time out.

The Trojans will have to do without hat-trick hero Marvin Belboda who is serving a one match suspension.

The Zebras, who meet Wolves for the fourth time in as many weeks, may welcome back central defender Stanton Lewis and Raynel Lightbourne to their ranks.

Wolves will be looking to get their league title aspirations back on track, but they will have to do it minus the services of Mark Ray, who is banned after accumulating too many bookings.

First Division leaders Boulevard will be keeping a close eye on Prospect in the division’s top match at Police Field.

Prospect have recorded some impressive wins of late and will definitely be looking to extend their current run against the league’s sole remaining undefeated team.

“We are on top, and we intend on staying there!” exclaimed Boulevard coach John Rebello. “My players know exactly what is required from them on the day.”

Somerset Eagles host Ireland Rangers at White Hill Field, but they will have to contend without the services of the suspended Jelani Butterfield.

Southampton Rangers take on Paget at Southampton Oval, while St. David’s, who have Otis Minors suspended, host Young Men’s Social Club.
