HWP hosts wellness fair for staff
The sudden death of an employee following a heart attack has spurred motor group HWP into organising a series of health initiatives for staff.
Spokeswoman Jocene Wade said the 35-year-old woman, who died in August, initially left work for the day thinking she had flu before her condition spiralled.
The shock among colleagues prompted bosses to set up HWP's first wellness fair, in the Daihatsu Showroom on St. John's Road, where staff were given information on health and took part in free screenings on Tuesday.
Advice was handed out by representatives from Bermuda Diabetes Association, the KEMH Cardiac Care Programme, the Employee Assistance Programme, the Stroke Society, Open Airways and Safety and Health [AT] Work.
BF&M Insurance conducted a health risk assessment of employees and is compiling the results which will be shared with respondents.
Ms Wade, group director of HWP's parent company New Venture Holdings, said: "They were very shocked and sad (when the employee died). Then we started hearing the rumblings about what happened and we realised we needed to be educated about their health.
"Recognising that we all make daily choices that impact our health and well-being — whether it's a decision to exercise or to eat a more nutritious meal — we agreed that sharing information was the best way to help our employees go about their lives with a renewed focus on their mental and physical health.
"As such, the idea for an HWP Wellness Fair came about. Tuesday's event was a great opportunity for our employees to learn about the health issues facing Bermuda today and discover how they can make healthier choices in their own lives.
"We would like to thank all of our employees who chose to attend the Wellness Fair and also extend our gratitude to those charities and individuals who took time out of their busy schedules to share their expertise on these important issues."
Jonathan Brewin, president and CEO of HWP, said: "At HWP, we believe in the value of our employees, and we recognise that healthier employees are happier and more productive overall. "We recognise that by providing beneficial information and free health screenings, we can empower our employees to make healthier lifestyle choices."
HWP is also planning a series of lunch and learn sessions, where all employees will get the chance to pick up health tips.
